  1.          Here  is a list of some other freeware programs I have  written 
  2.          which you may be interested in.   Versions released before 1996 
  3.          were uploaded to the Simtel archive;  the primary site for this 
  4.          is ftp.coast.net.   In the future I expect to be releasing  new 
  5.          programs   and  new  versions  of  existing  programs  to   the 
  6.          simtel.net archive,  located at ftp.simtel.net.   Each of these 
  7.          archives has many mirrors around the world; visit the main site 
  8.          for  a  current  list.    In the following file  names  I  have 
  9.          represented  the version numbers by the string "nn"  since they 
  10.          may  change between the time I publish this file and  the  time 
  11.          you look for them.

  13.          BIGTXTnn - This program takes  its command  line  argument  and 
  14.          magnifies the characters so that they are 4 to 8 or more  times 
  15.          larger.    It uses several font sources,  including any  screen 
  16.          font and can be  used for batch files,   text file headings and 
  17.          banners.  If you remember bigecho, this does a similar function 
  18.          but  has  many more options and features.  It can be  found  in 
  19.          directory msdos/textutil.

  21.          NVLTFNTS  - This archive contains a screen font loader  and  12 
  22.          unusual  screen  fonts.   The loader produces fonts  which  are 
  23.          persistant but which can be overridden any time you wish.   The 
  24.          screen fonts are compatible with BIGTEXT.   It can be found  in 
  25.          directory  msdos/screen.    Here's a sample of using  the  Olde 
  26.          English font with BIGTEXT:

  45.          FLPKITnn - This archive  contains a set of 8 utilities to  help 
  46.          you speed   up and test your floppy disks and drives.   It  can  
  47.          be found in directory msdos/diskutil.  In particular you get:

  49.             FLOPPARM - Speeds  up   drive  operation  by  modifying  DOS 
  50.                        parameters. 
  51.  
  52.             TESTSTEP - Determines  the maximum  step rate  which can  be 
  53.                        used with a particular drive.
  54.  
  55.             FLOPTEST - Tests  drive for  proper operation.  Also does  a 
  56.                        quick  readability  check for every sector  of  a 
  57.                        floppy disk. 
  58.  
  59.             SEEKBNCH - Performs  a seek  benchmark  for three  different 
  60.                        types of seeks.
  61.  
  62.             FLOPSKEW - Determines optimal skewing for proper formatting.  
  63.                        By  using  the  findings  of  this  program   and 
  64.                        FDFORMAT  you  can speed up reading  and  writing 
  65.                        by 30%   every  time  you  use  a  floppy   disk. 
  66.                        Formatting is faster, too.

  68.             FLOPRPM  - Checks a drive's rotation speed for accuracy  and 
  69.                        consistent operation. 
  70.  
  71.             FLOPINFO - Displays a floppy disk's formatting parameters.

  73.             FLOPSCRB - Used with a cleaning disk to clean a drive's head 
  74.  
  75.          RUNTIMnn - This utility  can measure the execution time of  DOS 
  76.          programs,  commands and batch files  with  a  resolution better 
  77.          than  one  thousandth  of  a second.   The measurement  can  be 
  78.          saved in a file or displayed on your screen.  The output format 
  79.          and  accompanying  text can be specified.  It can be  found  in 
  80.          directory msdos/sysutil.

  82.          S48Vnn - S48  is a software  simulator of the 8048/49/50 micro- 
  83.          processor.   All registers,   flags and RAM are visible contin- 
  84.          uously  on  the  screen.    Instructions are  disassembled  and 
  85.          displayed  as  they are simulated.   Cheaper and more  colorful 
  86.          than an MDS!  It can be found in directory msdos/emulators.

  88.          LJLPTnn - This program prints text in landscape oriented  pages 
  89.          at  177  columns by 75 lines on a Laserjet.  Great  for getting 
  90.          fast,   quiet, compact program listings.  Initial  banner page, 
  91.          page headers,   line numbers,  multiple copies and graybar  row 
  92.          shading are available as options.  Source included.   It can be 
  93.          found in directory msdos/laserjet.

  95.          WASTEDnn - This  program shows  you the  effects  of  different 
  96.          cluster sizes on the efficiency of file storage on your system.  
  97.          If  you're  upgrading to a larger hard disk,   the  information 
  98.          displayed  may affect the size of the partitions you choose for 
  99.          your  hard  disk and save you megabytes of wasted  space.    In 
  100.          directory msdos/diskutil. 
  101.  
  102.          VGATXTnn  - This program displays a screen full of  text  which 
  103.          you  supply  in  any of several colorful  effects  produced  by 
  104.          direct  manipulation  of  the  VGA  hardware  registers.     In 
  105.          directory msdos/textutil.

  107.          P5BUGnn - A simple  test for  the Pentium  FDIV "flaw".  Source 
  108.          included.  In directory msdos/sysutil.

  110.          In  addition, here  are some programs  which I have  made  some 
  111.          contribution to, even though I'm not the original author. 
  112.  
  113.          TODIRnn - Change to  any subdirectory  just by  specifying  the 
  114.          first few letters of its name,  no matter which drive it is  on 
  115.          or  how deep it is in the subdirectory tree.    An  approximate 
  116.          string search is also available if you're really lost.   Source 
  117.          included.  In the directory msdos/dirutil. 
  118.  
  119.          FIGLETnn - Makes big letters rendered with ordinary ASCII char-
  120.          acters,  as seen in e-mail signatures,  in seconds.  I  did the 
  121.          DOS port for version 2.1.   In the directory msdos/textutil. In 
  122.          the same directory you can find figfont1.zip which contains 150 
  123.          different figlet fonts.   Here is an example using the standard

  133.          UARTTYnn - This program  identifies which type of UART chip  is 
  134.          used by all of the COM ports in your system.   Source included.  
  135.          It can be found in directory msdos/io_util.

  137.          O-SYMBnn - This archive contains a TrueType symbol font  useful 
  138.          for  preparing  orienteering clue sheets.   If  you're  not  an 
  139.          orienteer,   just  think  of  it as  a  collection  of  vaguely 
  140.          cartographic dingbats.  I  converted this from Macintosh Type 1 
  141.          format and spent a lot of time touching up the characters.   In 
  142.          directory win3/font. 
  143.  
  144.          BCF7713B - This is a really buggy Fortran compiler but it's the 
  145.          only public domain Fortran compiler  that  I'm aware of. It may
